Pumphouse Gardens was established in 1986. We started out with a road side stand on Woodbury Glassboro Rd. We stay in that stand for about 4 years. We then graduate into a greenhouse at the end of the driveway. That we called our selling house We were a buy and sell business until the quality of plants started going down hill, then we started growing our own product. This phase of the business required putting up 8 greenhouses. 2 quanset and 6 hoop houses. We started out growing perennials. Through trial and error we found the best that the weather condition could handle, we were the only greenhouse business that specialized in perennials in this area.

As public demand came about for perennials other growers started in with them. We then started with hard to find plants, Martha Washington Geraniums, Gloxinia, Hibiscus, Cyclamen, Christmas Cactus, and Poinsettia to name a few, along with still growing a large assortment of perennials. We now grow a large assortment of ornamental plants, Geraniums, containers and Hanging Baskets, along with perennials. We are always looking for that different plant to have.

Now let me tell you something about the founders of the business Robert and Pearl Thomas. Robert was a salesman for Fred C. Gloeckner Bulb and Seed Company; he had a horticulture degree from Rugter University. Robert born in Millville, NJ and later moved to Pitman. His family had a florist shop in Millville named Parent Florist. Pearl was a homemaker and secretary for Robert. Pearl was born in Shilow NJ then move to Bridgeton. Robert was in the air force; they moved around then settled in Wenonah, NJ in 1959. They brought up four kids. They also had a greenhouse business in Grenloch,NJ ( Now Washington Township area) they had this business for about 7 years.

Then in 1986 they bought Duffield's property on Woodbury Glassboro Rd and that is when Pump House Gardens was born. They went with Pump House Gardens names because at the time you had Tall Pines Inn and Golf Course, you also had Tall Pines Nursing Home. There were enough Tall Pines names in the area, the Woodbury pumping station is just down the street from us on the right hand side of the road with the station being that close we figured we call it PUMP HOUSE GARDENS, that's how it got it name.

Pearl couldn't do all the work herself so her daughter Diana joined in the family business; she also had another daughter, Debbie that work from time to time to help out. Debbie specialized in the floral end creating her Easter Basket at Easter and her magnificent Wreaths at Christmas Time.
